A couple of
years ago, around the time the financial crisis was in its steepest decline and
people were being laid off all over the country, a good friend of mine told me
how he had just been fired by a detail body shop he had been working in for
more than half a decade. I was shocked by his news and then he went on to
explain to me how business was just ‘’dead’’. I wondered if people weren’t
crashing anymore and he said they were but that due to the bad strains on
household income and primary needs being obviously prioritized, people were
putting off fixing bumpers or getting details in order to make ends meet.
He has
always been a go getter so I wondered what he would do next. As a friend, I
offered him words of encouragement but found little else to offer since at that
time we were all doing so badly. He didn’t need much help from me though; he
was just telling a close friend about his misfortunes. I guess that’s what
friends are for. A few months later, I drove by his place to go say hi. We
stayed in contact over social networks but didn’t really touch the topic. He
told me how he had started a car washing business and how thanks to pressurewashing he was actually making a profit!
I asked him
if regular car cleaning (with a regular no-pressure valve) wasn’t a better
option. He said it wasn’t and added that his customers were very pleased with
the end results which made them come back. He then improved his processes by
recycling water and getting Microban reusable mops to dry interiors and
exteriors (those mops are reusable). Thanks to pressure washing and efficient
item usage he got through the worst of the crisis and managed to build a solid
reputation with his growing client base. After the worst was over, he opened up
a little shop of his own and hired a few workers to help him out. It’s that
kind of people that are worth looking at, he deserves my best.
